Customs clearance alone is not sufficient
When veterinary controls
determine release
For many animal-related and food-related goods, customs clearance is not the only condition for release. Consignments may be subject to veterinary checks at an approved border control post, including documentary review and, where required, identity or physical inspection.
In the Netherlands, consignments subject to veterinary control must be notified in advance to the NVWA. The required Common Health Entry Document (CHED) is submitted and registered in TRACES. This is the European Commission’s online system used to process and monitor veterinary entry documents before goods are released.
If documentation, timing or inspection planning is not aligned with the logistics flow, shipments can be held. For perishable or time-sensitive goods, this has direct consequences for continuity and cost.
